Radiation oncology vendor Elekta has received regulatory certification from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for Unity, its MR radiation therapy system.
Unity incorporates a 1.5-tesla MRI scanner into a 7-MV linear accelerator to provide real-time MR image guidance of radiation therapy procedures. With the system, clinicians use MR images to reshape radiation dose based on daily changes in shape, size, and position of tumor and surrounding healthy anatomy -- improving the accuracy of radiation dose delivery.
Elekta in March 2019 announced the receipt of a Medical Device License for Unity from Health Canada. The approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission clears the technology for clinical use in Canada, according to the company.
