IBA opens new radiotracer site

Radioisotope manufacturer Ion Beam Applications (IBA) of Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium, has opened a new facility for radiopharmaceutical R&D and production in Belgium.

Located in the city of Fleurus, the facility is on the site of the National Radioelements Institute (IRE). The facility has a 14-MeV cyclotron, which can be used for both very-high-level industrial production and for scientific research, according to the company.

IBA expects to supply radiopharmaceuticals for clinical trials throughput Europe, such as fluorine-18 fluorothymidine, fluoromisonidazole, F-18 choline, iodine-124, and copper-64. In 2008, the site will begin producing PET radiopharmaceuticals, mainly fluorodeoxyglucose.

The company said it invested more than 6 million euros ($8.2 million) to develop the site.
