Philips renews support for athlete heart screening

Royal Philips Electronics, the parent company of Philips Medical Systems of Andover, MA, has renewed its support for Team of Physicians for Students (TOPS), a sports physicals event in Phoenix designed to uncover heart conditions that may lead to sudden cardiac death in athletes.

TOPS events will be held at high schools in the Phoenix area on April 28 and are free. They include a family health history review and noninvasive cardiac testing using ECGs and echocardiography exams.

The TOPS event in 2006 conducted cardiac testing on more than 2,500 student athletes, identifying 385 students that required follow-up examinations. Of these, 114 students were not cleared to participate in sports due to potentially fatal heart conditions first detected by abnormal ECGs and echo exams, according to Philips.

Philips is supporting TOPS through its Save an Athlete program, which aims to improve health and wellness by educating student athletes, their families, doctors, athletic directors, and coaches about preventing sudden death through early cardiac testing.
