VANCOUVER - The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging (SNMMI) introduced a new slate of officers for 2013-2014 on Monday at its annual meeting.
The organization elected Dr. Gary Dillehay, professor of radiology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, as its new president, and Dr. Peter Herscovitch, director of the PET department at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) Clinical Center, as president-elect.
Dillehay has served at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine since 2006 and previously was a professor of radiology at Loyola Stritch School of Medicine.
Dillehay said that implementing SNMMI's strategic plan will be a main focus over the next six months. Long-term goals include the development and approval of new technologies, facilitating the availability and clinical utilization of these technologies, increasing the appropriate use of radionuclide therapy, and supporting and enhancing the professional workforce and environment for nuclear medicine and molecular imaging professionals.
Herscovitch has served at the NIH Clinical Center since 1987. He was named chief of the PET section that year, and in 2005 he was appointed as director of the PET department. Prior to his career at NIH, Herscovitch was an attending physician at Barnes Hospital and an instructor and assistant professor of neurology and radiology at Washington University School of Medicine.
As president-elect, Herscovitch's priorities include fostering the development, testing, and approval of new radiopharmaceuticals for nuclear medicine and molecular imaging procedures, particularly for brain amyloid imaging and neuroendocrine tumors.
