SIR Foundation launches endowment, bestows annual awards

The Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Foundation has announced the launch of the SIR Foundation Endowment and bestowed awards at its annual meeting in Nashville, TN.

The inaugural endowment was granted during the society's annual meeting being held between March 29 and April 2. The first gift to the endowment was made by Barry Katzen, MD, founder and medical director of Miami Cardiac & Vascular Institute in Florida, and his wife Judith Katzen.

In related SIR news, the society on March 30 presented its Leaders in Innovation Award to four individuals: Matthew Mauro, MD, of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine in Chapel Hill; M. Victoria Marx, MD, of the University of Southern California; John Kaufman, MD, of Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland; and Jeanne LaBerge, MD, of the University of California, San Francisco. All four helped establish the interventional radiology (IR) residency and obtain approval of IR as a primary specialty from the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS).

Finally, the society has honored Michael Darcy, MD with the Frederick S. Keller, MD, Philanthropy award and Alexander Vezeridis, MD, PhD, of Stanford University with the Dr. Gary J. Becker Young Investigator award.
