B. Braun Medical has received Food and Drug Administration clearance for its Introcan Safety IV catheters, designed for radiology applications. The catheters, which come in 14-gauge to 22-gauge sizes with power injectors up to 300 psi, incorporate a passive safety clip engineered directly into the catheter hub, according to the Bethlehem, PA-based healthcare product manufacturer.
No user interaction or change in clinical technique is required to deploy the stainless steel clip shielding the needle tip, according to the vendor. As a result, there is no risk of inadvertent activation and the safety mechanism can't be bypassed, B. Braun said.
